July 7th, 2009 Actually this is known as National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Cemetery), it is similar to Arlington National Cemetery in Virgina or Normandy Cemetery in France. Here are the pictures of the entrance into the cemetery. It is locared within minutes of Waikiki Beach, and it takes about 2-3 hours including travel time. It is a great location to visit to get some history of the Pacific Rim battles and honor for the soldiers that served there.
As you enter the cemetery you will notice the flagpole dead center with the five military emblems of the USA> In the background is the Cathedral, Wall of Honor and maps of the battles from WWII. Also located just within the entrance, on the right ahnd side is a museum. This museum has pictures, letters, and a short movie describing what is located within the cemetery.
Walking through the cemetery you will notice how the headstones are located flat on the ground, they have the name, rank, service, DOB, DOD and what campaigns the soldier fought in. Also note that the bronze star for medal of honor desination.
As you walk through the cemetery also note the “Lady of the Sea”, the Cathedral and the view of DiamondHead.
